1. Why do IT companies like TCS have so high attrition rate? 2. Why don't we see such high attrition rate in core companies? Further discussion on this topic Questions were asked only by IIM Calcutta professor.

Maths & statistics questions

1. Questions on continuity and differentiability (by IIT Kgp prof - I was asked to name a topic I'm comfortable with) a. Are all continuous functions differentiable? b. Give example of a function which is continuous but not differentiable. c. Differentiate mod(x) ^2 using first principle. d. Few more questions on this topic all of them were basic questions 2. Question on poverty line - how, as a policy maker I would distribute funds among few groups of people having different monthly incomes. Given the poverty line of the region, I was asked what would be my approach - distribute funds equally among all the groups or implement some other method of distribution. The prof also defined a metric called the Headcount ratio. My answer was to target groups which have income close to the poverty line in order to decrease the headcount ratio but that was a wrong approach as per the prof. (the only question by ISI prof)

PANELIST 1: IIT Kharagpur Introduce yourself -> As I mentioned Olympiad and (subject matter expert ) for mathematics ,my whole interview on mathematics and statistics ... Q1. How many times a coin should be flip to get the two consecutive heads. I said 8, don't know whether it's correct or not but explain him by giving approach. Q2 . A family has two children given that one is a girl. Find the probability that the other child is a boy. (Give them correct answer I think as 1/3). PANELIST 2: IIM CALCUTTA Q3. What should I take the two prime number so that sum is a perfect square. And that perfect square is always divisible by which number. (He was interested in approach ) I said let two prime numbers be 6k+1 and other be 6p-1 or 6p+1 so the sum of two prime numbers be 6(k+p) or 6k +6p +2 , i give the answer 19 and 17 which sum 36 and said that number will always be divisible by 2 ( both professor said he is not satisfied with why u let prime number as 6k +1 and 6p+1), i do the method correct but they are not satisfied with my approach. Q4. How do u find the roots of polynomial equation numerically ? He gave me hint that u have studied in engineering but I am unable to recall. PANELIST 3: ISI professor -> asked vague STATISTICS. Q5. We have used histogram to check and analysing the variability of data. What is one drawback we see in histogram. Q6.(This question is very absurd i don't understand) Y= f(x) and Y = F (X) where x is random variable let f(x)follow exponential distribution ...what can u conclude about F(X) , he said u know the difference in X and x right. ISI professor giving question by reading a book and his voice is not at all clear . I made him repeat the question three times. He wait for just 30 second not giving any hint and said ok I am done.

Tips for aspirants

1. For written test, previous year JEE Mains Math questions are a good practice source. Keep a note of questions you found challenging the first time you solved and keep revisiting them periodically to get comfortable with the Quant section. 2. DILR and VARC are comparatively simpler than CAT, so don't need to solve very difficult problems while practicing for these sections. 3. For interview, try to frame the introduction in a way that drives the professors to your strong points. Be strong with Probability Statistics, Linear Algebra and first year Engineering Math basics. There will certainly be some questions from one of these topics.

Work-ex / profile questions

P1: Asked me about my background. My role as a software developer there. what I have done after my first job. (I'm currently working as an inspector central tax.) He asked to explain the difference between IGST, CGST etc. Who's benefiting from GST? (I said win-win, tried to explain but was cut short) What's the rate of inflation. (Retail inflation is upwards of 7%. I think 7.4%) Has CGST effected inflation. (It's the other way round.. inflation has effected GST)

Maths & statistics questions

P2: what do you want to be asked about in maths? (I said linear algebra, calculus..) 1. Suppose you have A 5X2 and B 2X5. What can you say about the rank of AB. Why? Tried to explain.. he said I'm just applying a formula.. so i said we can take a variable matrix A, B and multiply them... Then convert it into Row Reduced form, I'm sure we'll get rank almost 2). P3 was specifically called on to ask "Engineering Questions". P3: Is relaminarisation possible? ( I said its been a long time, I don't remember. He said these are basics, you should not forget) What's choking in a flow? How does it impact the diameter of the nozzle? What if I keep increasing the diameter? (I said as the diameter increases, pressure decreases and if the flow is too fast, there will be shocks) What's an instantaneous flow? (No time lag between starting and the point in consideration) How do you measure an instantaneous flow? ( I was trying to explain some method, he said it's differential calculus) What is Euler's integral theorem? (complex analysis.. explained from what I remembered. Forgot to use the word residue.) What's the difference between Hessian and Jacobian? (Explained that Hessian is used to get an idea about the maxima and minima while Jacobian is used while transforming coordinate axis) Where do you use them? If I say one of them contains first order partial derivatives of vector valued function what will it be? (I said Jacobian. He asked if I'm sure, then I said both contains first order partial derivatives. Then he said one of them has partial derivatives of scalar valued function and one has partial derivatives of vector valued function) In simulations, we use Euler's method 1, Kutta 2, Kutta 4.. what's the difference? (I said these are used for numerical integration.. he said *that's not it*.. they have something to do with the time factor.) After that, he said to other profs, we have asked him enough questions.. they agreed and they said I may leave.
